Recommended Dog Toys

1. Active Toys

  • Rugged Chew Toys: Look for very hard rubber options, like Nylabone and Kong products. These toys are great for chewing, carrying, and come in various shapes and sizes.
  • Rope Toys: Often designed in a bone shape with knotted ends, these are durable and enjoyable for tugging and chewing.
  • Tennis Balls: A classic choice for dogs. However, monitor their condition closely; discard them if they show signs of being chewed through.

2. Distraction Toys

  • Kong-type Toys: These are excellent when filled with treats or peanut butter and frozen. They provide hours of engagement as dogs must chew through to access the goodies. Ensure they’re the right size for your dog to avoid choking hazards.
  • Treat Balls or Busy-Box Toys: These large rubber cubes have compartments for hiding treats. Dogs can only access the treats by rolling and nudging the cube around.

3. Comfort Toys

  • Stuffed Toys: Soft, plush toys can offer comfort, but not all dogs are suitable for them. Here are some tips:
    • Choose a size that your dog can carry.
    • Opt for sturdy options if your dog likes to chew or shake toys aggressively.
  • Homemade Comfort Items: Old clothing items like t-shirts, pillowcases, towels, or blankets can be soothing, especially if they carry your scent. However, be prepared for these items to be shredded by enthusiastic play.

Getting the Most Out of Dog Toys

  1. Rotate Toys Weekly: Keep a selection of toys available by rotating them weekly. This keeps them fresh and interesting for your dog.
  2. Variety: Ensure a mix of toy types is easily accessible. If your dog has a favorite, like a soft plush toy, consider leaving it out consistently.
  3. Interactive Play: Engage in games like “Hide and Seek” or “Find the Toy,” which can make playtime more exciting.
  4. Bonding Activities: Use toys for interactive play that strengthens your bond, such as fetching a ball or playing tug-of-war. This helps your dog expend physical and mental energy, reducing stress linked to boredom.
  5. Mental Stimulation: Focused games that require specific tasks can provide ample exercise without needing extensive space, aiding in mental stimulation and reducing anxiety.

By carefully selecting and utilizing a variety of toys, you can create a fulfilling environment for your dog that promotes physical health and mental well-being.

Toxic Foods for Pets

It’s crucial to be aware of foods that can be toxic to pets, as some common items in our kitchens can cause serious health issues for our furry companions. Here’s a summary of some hazardous foods and their effects:

Chocolate, Coffee, & Caffeine

  • Toxic Component: Methylxanthines.
  • Effects: Vomiting, diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, and potentially death.
  • Danger Levels: Dark chocolate is more toxic than milk chocolate; white chocolate is the least toxic, while baking chocolate is most dangerous.

Alcohol

  • Effects: Vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, central nervous system depression, difficulty breathing, tremors, abnormal blood acidity, coma, and even death.

Avocado

  • Toxic Component: Persin (found in leaves, seeds, and bark, as well as the fruit).
  • Effects: Vomiting and diarrhea.

Macadamia Nuts

  • Effects: Weakness, depression, vomiting, tremors, and hyperthermia. Symptoms usually appear within 12 hours of ingestion and can last 12-48 hours.

Yeast Dough

  • Risk: When ingested, it can rise in the stomach, causing gas buildup that may lead to painful bloating or intestinal rupture. Cooked bread is safe in small amounts (5-10% of daily caloric intake).

Xylitol

  • Common Sources: Sugar-free gum, candies, baked goods, toothpaste.
  • Effects: Can cause insulin spikes leading to hypoglycemia and liver failure. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, loss of coordination, seizures, and elevated liver enzymes.

Grapes and Raisins

  • Danger: Unknown toxic substance that can lead to kidney failure. Reactions can be more pronounced in pets with existing health problems.

Onions, Garlic, & Chives

  • Effects: Gastrointestinal irritation and potential red blood cell damage. Cats are more susceptible, but dogs can also be affected if consumed in large amounts. Occasional trace amounts in food are generally safe.

Milk

  • Reason for Concern: Pets generally lack the enzyme lactase, which leads to digestive upset and diarrhea when consuming milk and milk-based products.

Salt

  • Risk: Excessive intake can lead to excessive thirst and urination, sodium ion poisoning, vomiting, diarrhea, depression, tremors, elevated body temperature, seizures, and even death.

Important Reminders

  • Always consult a veterinarian if you suspect your pet has ingested any toxic food.
  • Avoid giving pets these foods whether they’re raw, cooked, or processed.
  • Monitor your pets for symptoms related to food toxicity and seek medical help if any adverse reactions occur.

By staying informed and vigilant, you can help protect your pets from these harmful substances.

Treat Usage in Dog Training

When used properly, food and treats can be powerful tools for motivating your dog during training or occupying their time when you are away. Many people do not give much consideration to the type of treats they use, often underestimating the importance of varying the treats depending on the application.

Applications for Using Food with Dogs Outside of Normal Feeding:

Every dog, regardless of age, breed, sex, or size, responds to two basic motivators:

Different Treats for Different Jobs:

Fortunately, there are numerous options for dog treats available today, each serving different purposes.

– Treats my dog loves may not be loved by your dog.*
– All treats carry different motivational value for your dog.* It is important to observe your dog’s reaction to specific food treats. Some treats have such high value that the dog may stop thinking, while some dogs cannot focus if they know you have a high-value treat with you.

Examples of High, Medium, and Low-Value Treats:

– High-Value: Cut-up steak, hamburger, hot dogs, cheese, chicken.
– Medium-Value: Soft training treats, Natural Balance treat logs, Liver Biscotti.
– Low-Value: Regular kibble.

Always Try a New Treat Before Training:

It is recommended to let a dog sample a new treat as soon as you get it.

– Do not wait until training classes to let the dog try the new treat. Test them at home first.
– The first time you use a new treat, the dog might play with it before eating. They may need to convince themselves it is indeed a new treat. Often, once the dog eats a few treats, they decide they are enjoyable and consume them quickly.

My Dog Isn't Much of a Food Enthusiast:

While some dogs seem absolutely crazy about food, others do not appear to have much of a food drive. Generally, every dog can develop a good drive, although some naturally have a higher one. There are several reasons why some dogs may not seem interested in food:

– Dogs need to be hungry for a food reward to be effective. Adjust their feeding schedule so they eat after training, not before. If you feed them post-training, wait 2-3 hours.
– Start training with high-value food rewards like pieces of steak to trigger interest and motivation.
– There is nothing wrong with using leftover steak cut into small chunks. Once the dog understands that food rewards are part of training, you can switch to various all-natural treats that fit your needs.
– Letting a dog go a day without food can increase their food drive, but generally, do not let them go more than two days without feeding.

Using treats effectively can greatly enhance your dog’s training and overall behavior, making both your lives more enjoyable and fulfilling.
